Plot Details

The world is bigger than you think. Beneath the 'normal' surface are things and people which most humans don’t know about, don’t want to know about, and will do their damn best to forget about if they ever come anywhere near them. In a fashionable modern defence system for the mind, people won’t see things they don’t want to see.

That dead body covered with odd toothmarks? Attacked by stray dogs.

The traces of thirty different infectious diseases on a single, fresh corpse? Statistical anomaly.

The Tyrannosaurus Rex skeleton from the museum scattered in a thousand pieces on a clawed-up college lawn? Student prank. Surely.

The world is weirder, more wonderful, and more deadly than it seems, to most. The Nevernever—the esoteric world of fae and ghosts—is just a shadow's depth from normal life. Courts of vampires divide the night and nightlife into fenced and guarded farms. The overstretched White Council of Wizards tries to protect the innocent, fight their wars, and enforce their seven laws of magic; for all three their only punishment is death.

All of this is going on, right under our noses. We never notice it purely because we do not want to. After all, who would? Those who are immersed in the supernatural rarely ever choose to, and can never hope to return to ignorance. Perhaps they were born to this strange underworld, perhaps they once answered a call for help that everyone else ignored, or perhaps something once came to claim them, and perhaps it succeeded.

In a town in one weather-beaten corner of England, the supernatural world is almost ready to come to a head. The things that go bump in the night are reaching for the light switch.

And in an upmarket bar in the city centre, a man with empty hands climbs a staircase...

The pub was not designed to be crowded.

Kat looked over the room once more, her lime-and-soda clasped in both gloved hands. There were maybe eight tables, each designed to seat ten close friends or six uncomfortable strangers, with any intervening number of chairs strewn in between. All of them were occupied to one degree or another, mainly by small bands of loud customers. This was not what the website had promised her.

The pub may have been the new acquisition of some obscure chain, with aspirations of attaining upmarket bistro status, sans the food. Any regulars, sticking to the guns of the older establishment rather than attracted by the aspirational feel of the new, appeared happy to stand in casual circles around the edges of the room.

Kat, engaged in a vain search for a quiet spot to drain her drink, cast her eyes at a narrow staircase. A man stood impassive on the first step, his posture that of a bodyguard more than a common security man, doing his best to not draw everyone’s attention. He was managing it quite nicely.

She looked back at the room. By some miracle, a couple who must have been in their late 40’s had chosen that moment to stand unsteadily, easing their spray-tanned forms out of opposite chairs and preparing to strike out towards the door. Nobody else saw them vacate that table.

The young woman stepped in the table’s direction, trying not to demonstrate any undue fluidity of motion, and took the chair perpendicular to the still vacating couple. She made no eye contact, only planted her drink on the table and drew her elbows in.

The segment of lime bobbed atop its bed of ice. She watched it for a moment, a quiet anxiety over her. The table was now partially taken, but she knew how little that would stop the locals. At least she hoped nobody would try to strike up a conversation...

Aurana Sarius

She made sure her White blonde hair was carefully tucked away under her hood, and double checked her belongings. Once everything was in order, she tugged her hood down over her eyes and stepped inside.

The pub was...unusually crowded. Good. More opportunities for her to steal her dinner. She began picking her way through the tables and chairs, looking for anyone who stood out...they tended to be the ones who didn't fit in...easier targets...and generally easier to distract and thus get her loot.

Aurana eventually settled for leaning against the bar and ordered some juice. Nothing Alchoholic. She needed to be sober and Alert for her line of work. She passed a few coins to the bartender and quietly sipped it, her eyes sweeping the Pub From beneath her hood.

Catherine

Another fruitless day coming to an end.

How long since I start doing this? How much longer should I keep on going? The boredom, the sickness of a monotonous activities is apparent, even though I don't even remember my dinner yesterday.

...I suppose I still need some break. Let's see... been a while since I even relax. One, two, two almost three weeks? No wonder my mind is exhausted.

Seven PM already. Guess I'd call it a day, get a drink. Anything new would need to wait until tomorrow anyway. My voicemail... alright, it's good.

Jacket, wallet, keys, phone, several copies of my address, aaand spare money. Guess that's it... ah, got to hang the notification.

"I'm not home right now, please leave message at this number..." Alright, done. Lock the door and be on my way.

*****

Hmm? It's crowded. Should've gone to the other place... oh well, guess I'd stay next to the bar.

"Hey Cat, the usual?"

I smile wryly at the bartender.

"What's my usual?"

Ki'Tonya Penvellyn

She's been wandering around the foreign town for hours now, trying to get a feel for the location of what would be the start of a new life away from her so-called "mother" and the kingdom who shunned her for being more "different" than what they were comfortable with. Honestly, it wasn't like she would have chosen this new "life"...

Bored of walking any further for the day, Ki'Tonya decided it would be a good decision to try and mingle with the locals. Surprising to her, that there are still people out on the town at night, although she did welcome it. She always did prefer the nighttime, even before her...little accident. She glanced up at a pub, her eyes giving off a split-second spark upon seeing all of the people conversing and having a good time. Perfect!

After checking her attire, made up of a simple sleeveless blue-green dress and black slippers, and fixing the soft ribbon tied to a single streak of white hair on the left side of her head, she slowly made her way through the pub door. She glanced around at all the people, slowly beginning to regret entering a crowded establishment. Too many people at once...this might be a little problematic...hmm...

She noticed a fairly young lady, sitting at the a table by herself apparently, staring down a lime wedge, bobbing in her drink. She seemed around her age, give or take a couple of years, maybe interacting with her would be a little easier. She made a few strides towards the table, her curled black hair bouncing softly as she walked...although it was noted that she may not be a big fan of people, given her body language...

She tried to give the warmest smile she could in an attempt at a good first impression, and gave a small wave to the woman. She then pointed to the vacant chair across from her, silently asking for a seat.

Kat briefly considered ignoring the newcomer, and hoping she would just sit down without the whole long-winded dance of polite conversation. On the other hand, she should probably try and be polite, lest she have to deal with an outpouring of passive-aggressive discontent from that side of the table.

The Changeling’s eyes flicked to the stranger, keeping her head still and face unmoving. She looked about her own age, and dressed far better than she was (of course). She was also smiling, the foul creature. She had been hoping for a moment of peace and quiet, for all that was worth in this bar. And she could hardly stand to leave now, in case the other young woman took that as some brazen sign of rejection.

Not quite a second had passed since the unspoken request, she realised. Kat nodded, her attention returning to the drink she hadn’t started on.

Ki'Tonya Penvellyn

Ki'Tonya smiles a little brighter once the young woman confirmed her seat. She nods once in gratitude and takes a seat in the chair. Well, she had made it passed the first step...but now, she's in for a bigger challenge. Ki'Tonya's smile slowly faded off her face, replaced by a slightly awkward expression. What does she do now? Normally, she would be the one to strike up usually lengthy conversations...un(fortunately) now, she lacked the voice to do so any longer.

Ki'Tonya leaned back a little in her chair, tapping fingertips together softly, her eyes shifting around to the point where she found herself bringing her attention to the lime in the glass as well, slowly slipping into a semi-deep thought. Surely, there must be something that can be done to break the ice...

Kairo

The pub was packed. Despite having to wrestle his way through several patrons, Kairo was in. However his boorish entrance had drawn more than a few eyes in his direction, he had noticed and dropped his head trying to hide his face; it worked about as well as expected, after all his face hadn't been hidden when he'd made his entrance but nobody had tried to rush him so he thanked his lucky stars and made for the bar.

The bar was, like the rest of the pub, overflowing with people and Kairo had to gently push an older man out of the way so he could reach it. The man had scowled at Kairo but he was used to it, and it didn't help that he looked terrible either but he was where he wanted be so he didn't really care. He gestured to the bartender who promptly noticed him and pretended he hadn't. Nice. Looking at it objectively though, Kairo looked like a homeless man who'd wandered in to shelter from the cold which, in all honesty, was at least partially true. Unshaven and unkempt, it was no surprise nobody wanted him there. With that, Kairo leaned on the bar's surface and stopped paying attention to the people around him.

The two women stared at the drink a little longer. Kat broke the tense moment by taking a sip from it. The soda wasn’t bad at all, but it wasn’t worth the noise, the press or the awkwardness of the current situation. The glass clinked oddly in her fingers as she returned it to the table.

She glanced around - Elsewhere in the pub the crowd seemed to be recoiling from some hunched newcomer at the bar, but otherwise nobody over there caught her attention. On the other tables, it was much the same story - too much life and flesh and sound to pick out individuals.

Apart from a young man at a corner table, nearest the guarded staircase up to the function room. He didn’t seem to be anything special. What was special, though, was the fact that the five or six thugs and ruffians around him seemed happy to have him tag along. If they were the core of a gang, what did that make him…?

Kat looked away before she would have risked staring. Whoever that was, he looked like trouble for someone.

It was apple ale, apparently I ask for it every single time. I do like apple mbut that was still surprisingly consistent, considering my condition.

Anyway, that's what I'm having tonight... is that a homeless man? I'd rather not get involved.

Find some distraction... next to me, a girl? Or a real feminime boy. Seems quite young. Is that juice? Not sure why would anyone visit a pub to drink juice alone-

I'm overthinking this. Just strike a conversation...

"Rare to see someone skipping alcohol around here. Driving your friends home later?"

Was that polite enough, I wonder..?

-----== Kaeden Noble ==-----

A gun barked, and Kaeden knew he’d failed.

Upon the first gunshot, the room became just as silent and still as the furniture, everyone neglecting motion for a full heartbeat. Perhaps they had imagined it?

Another gunshot. Pandemonium.

While the majority of patrons were screaming and shoving for the door, the young Noble was pushing into the crowd and glancing wildly at faces and postures. He shoved his own picket of enforcers up towards the door, where they began to stem the flow of fleeing civilians.

Kaeden’s attention remained on the people in the bar - whoever that gunshot belonged to, they probably had accomplices down here. People who were expecting the fireworks. If he could just find them...

A gunshot..?!

I froze for a sec. I managed to turn around when the second shot triggered the mass panic.

Most people were rushing for the door. Some still drozen in panic, or cowered behind their table. Anyone with gun... none with a glance. Can't really find the victim either, if there's any.

That's it for surveillance, for now hole up someplace safe until this blow off. I climbed the bar, in which I found the barkeep curled down. First thing first, my notes. Gotta write this down...

Fourth September

8.21 PM

First gunshot was heard, in which a second followed within five seconds. Can identify neither the shooter nor any victim. I hide behind the bar counter, waiting for the chaos to pass.

Aurana

She Stared at the girl for a moment, and was about to respond when the gunshot went off. The immediate first thoughts that swarmed through her head was that her fathers goons had found her, and that they were no on a "Dead or Alive" Mindset. She launched herself over the counter and crouched, listening.Well Crap. There went her theft and dinner too. Still...She'd rather NOT be full of holes.But...they couldn't possibly have found her here could they? It seemed highly unlikely, especially with all the trouble she went through to mask her identity and location from them. She noticed the girl behind the counter then too, and scowled.Great., she was still here...and WRITING of all things. Great.

Upon the second gunshot, Kat did the only sensible thing and hid under the table.

Her reasoning, at the time, was that the unseen shooter would be looking for easy-to-reach, open targets (should he be firing indiscriminately into the crowded bar). By making herself less available, she would be increasing considerably her chances of living through the night.

Even as she went for the table, Kat felt another option open up in front of her. Guns were a barbarian’s weapon, weren’t they? If she was being shot at, rather than challenged properly, there was no legal reason she couldn’t break one of the 10-seat tables on the attacker’s head and have done. In fact, it was the only appropriate response. Her claws itched with the thought, as if daring her to help them grow.

Kat smothered the faerie instinct under several seconds of perfectly normal, perfectly reasonable panic. Then she darted back up to retrieve her lime and tonic - She was suddenly determined to take a sip of the drink....

Kairo

The first gunshot was deafening. Kairo's entire body stiffened, his fingers sharply contracting, gouging deep trenches into the wooden surface of the bar. The second gunshot made every fibre of his being scream in pure panic. "They're here!" Squeaked a hysterical voice in Kairo's head "They're gonna take my head off"

The second shot sent the entire pub into a frenzy too with patrons tearing through one another to be outside away from the shooter, wherever they were. Kairo turned his head towards the door to see more people clawing their way out. For a moment he considered doing the same thing. Instead his body rocked forward launching him behind the bar and directly onto the cowering bartender. They both gave out loud "oofs" of discomfort before they lay in a stunned heap. In his panic, Kairo had made such a ruckus that he expected more bullets to pepper the bar at any second. Instead, all he'd actually done was startled the women taking cover behind the bar.

Aside from myself, there's the bartender and one two other patrons hiding behind the counter. One is the homeless man that entered mere seconds before the first shot, and the other is a girl that I tried to talk eith in order to avoid said homeless man.

If I may add, there are something peculiar with the patrons. Instead of confusion they have tense wariness in their person, as if they expect someone to shoot them. This may be baseless on my part, but if it's true that one (or worse, both) of them is hunted by armed killers then wouldn't staying this close put me in more danger than before..?

Ki'Tonya Penvellyn

My, this was an awkward situation. What a perfect first impression on a town native...staring at a drink in silence.

She began to look around the room, getting a feel for the whole environment. It felt oddly warm and comforting to her, possibly due to seeing all the people enjoying themselves. Though...it was a bit peculiar to her when the tone of the bar patrons turned from enjoyment to a slight apprehension at one man.

She glanced over at her table mate, matching her gaze to a strange man, seemingly...guarded by a few unsavory types? Strange, but they don't seem to want to cause trouble...wait...what was that?

A loud, foreign "bang" ringed through the pub, and all noise ceased. Upon the second bang, everyone went into a complete frenzy. Clearly fight-or-flight instincts have kicked in. Uh oh...

'Tonya quickly looked around the room, then to the door. She would likely be crushed in the evacuating crowd, and she did not want to take the chance. She simply did what a few others had done and slinked under the table, crouched down beside the young woman she sat with. She slowly glanced over to her with a sheepish expression.

-----= Kaeden Noble =-----

Most of the bystanders were now safely hiding, and therefore out of the way. Kaeden meanwhile had noticed a handful of individuals who had reacted… oddly, and the locations they had originally gone to ground in.

Two had tried to get out of sight more than anything else, as if they would rather avoid immediate detection than try to get out. In the capo’s current state of mind, that in itself was suspicious.

On a similar topic, the three who had piled up behind the bar. They could just have been looking for cover from gunshots, but then again they were quite conspicuous. One man who looked as though he hadn’t changed out of his clothes in a while. One young woman who had been taking pains to conceal her face. And the third, who kept referring to a notebook as if reading from a script. They were now hiding in one place, with waist-high cover between them and any further aggression.

Kaeden might have lost his charges, but now he had five choice suspects. At least one of them had to know who did it.

He nudged two of his retinue. No one in the bar had a weapon drawn, but the bodyguards all now had unobstructed access to their shoulders or waistbands. They looked uneasy, apprehensive, and one was staring directly at the stairs to the pub’s function room.
“That table. Huddsey, the three behind the counter.” His raised his voice just enough to carry clearly across the establishment. “Unharmed, if you can please. Just, be polite.”

The two heavies stood, now seemingly unconscious of their still concealed weapons, and walked to their targets. The first, reaching the bar, stage-whispered,
“Mr Noble would like a word with you”. The second, his voice deeper and a little softer, added a level “Oi, woman,” to his own request.

Mister Noble? Mister Noble... doesn't ring a bell. -- Well, not like anyone ever does. That's quite a name though.

I'll just quickly add it to today's notes. "Mr. Noble", circle it once.

Doesn't seems that the shooter is still around. Guess it's safe to get up? Anyway, I don't think these fellow will take a no for an answer. It would be quite troublesome, but guess I have no choice.

"Just a moment." I gulped my remaining apple ale from the counter. This will be a long night...

Katherine Pembrough

The drink had a pleasant, crisp taste, which mingled with the shock of cold fluids against her sensitive upper teeth to form a jolt of pleasure. Kat exhaled despite herself, and the circumstances. Somehow, she felt she’d earned this glass.

Above and around her table, the room had fallen largely quiet. People had stopped moving. The changeling sat cross-legged under her table, with the formerly smiling girl opposite her. It was oddly comforting down here - almost like being a child, pretending to be camping outside.

The someone poked his head under the table and growled,
“Oi, woman, Mr Noble wants a word with wi’ ye!” Kat tried to form some witty response, but all that came out of her mouth was,
“okay”. It seemed, whether she liked it or not, she was going to obey the man.

Even as she took another sip of the completely-worth-the-effort lime and soda, Kat could feel her mother’s side raging against her meekness. She shouldn’t need to bow to any mortal’s threats, real or implied or even blankly ignored by all parties. At least, she didn’t need to. She could probably have that man’s dominant hand against the table or floor before he could grab the gun, if she tried it…

And as fast as she was by long hours of training, an Akis Sakos of precisely her size and weight could probably eviscerate him, pull out his pistol, and shoot down one of his friends before anyone else could draw.

A second later, as she finished standing, Kat realised that last thought had been purely hers. It wasn’t a temptation, a compulsion or even an offer, it was a plain understanding of fact, and that terrified her.

It was therefore an even more pale and subdued Katherine that stood in the pub, waiting for the thug’s next orders.

Ki'Tonya Penvellyn

Well, this situation wasn't much better than the last, but at the very least, no one within view had been shot. She glanced around the room, sticking her head out slightly from her position. Seems as though a majority of the patrons were lucky enough to escape. She slowly turned her focus to the sole group remaining in the bar, uncovered. Were they the ones who fired...? And if so...why are they still here?

Ki'Tonya quickly pulled her head back under the table and glanced to the door...would it be wise to make a break for it? No, of course not, she'd be a clear shot then, if they were indeed the culprits...this is not good. She slowly glanced over to the young woman beside her again, trying her best to keep some distance under the table. This position is awkward enough as it is without adding personal space invasion.

She tensed up a bit and squeaked softly at the man looking under the table, trying her best to hide behind her hair. She once again began regretting her decision to enter this pub in the first place, wishing she had simply walked past and found somewhere else. She watched as the other girl slowly came out at the unsavory man's request.

What were they planning to do to the one's who've stayed behind...?

She had to bite her tongue at the orders, and instead glared at the man."Who shooting, at who ,and why? THEN maybe we can talk." She said shortly, "Cuz it's quiet comfy behind this counter, thank you." She said. Any reason to stay here and out of the Potential Line of fire. Were these her Fathers goons? Seemed to coincidental that she come to this little crappy bar, only to have bullets fly.Perhaps she'd be better sticking to a more Centralized bar or Tavern, where the Police would have responded near immediately...

Kairo

Kairo had gotten pretty comfortable behind the bar, the bartender was a pretty soft seat. As the pub had settled into silence his nerves had calmed slightly too. That was until the thugs started making demands, something about a 'Mr Noble' and his desire to see them. Kairo's mind raced at that, did he know a Mr Noble? Didn't sound like any of the other people who had tried to kill him but that didn't mean he wasn't an associate. The young man pursed his lip in thought before the two women beside him responded to the closest sounding thug. The first, the one taking notes, made a few hasty scribbles before she acknowledged the order and stood up. The other started to give them attitude; she didn't stand and looked less than impressed that the first woman had. Kairo liked her.

That being said, he liked not being shot more. He didn't speak but put one hand on the the counter to pull himself off of the still quivering bartender and then turned to stare directly at the thug. He looked relatively mundane but Kairo was well aware of how much that meant so he decided not to lower his guard. Thoughts of death in a hail of bullets, or other horrific means, were still fresh in his mind and it affected him visibly. The young man, turned on his heels to the fridge behind the bar, opened it and plucked a bottle of cider from inside. He returned to his stance from a moment ago, popped the bottle open with his thumb and began to drink. Like hell was he going to die without having a drink. Like hell.
